movie review : LIMBO

limbo

The newest Ben Sharrock’s movie called Limbo, released in 2020, two times nominated in the BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards), takes us to a great adventure in the refugee experience. In this drama movie, we follow Omar, a young Syrian musician who arrived in a Scottish remote island, waiting with a group of other refugees to get their asylum claims accepted. He shares a small cottage with 3 men, who attend the same cultural awareness class because of their same new arrival status. The main character Omar, played by Amir El Masry, carries an oud1 case from his homeland and it follows him everywhere. As a musician, after arriving in Scotland, he’s unable to play the oud anymore because his homeland memories’ are too heavy to bear. Time passing by, he managed to open up to others and he developed strong friendships with his housemates such as Wasef and Abedi but mostly Fahrad (Vikash Bhai) that guided him to become himself again as a son and a musician. This touching movie with a little spice of humor makes us facing the way refugees are treated and how it’s difficult to get to be accepted in the new country they come to. We appreciated the film, even if some parts were long, but it was emotional and made us reconsider our privileged life conditions.
